CHENNAI: A depression that formed Monday morning over the Southwest Bay of bengal and located about 630 km off the coast of Chennai, it is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm, to be called Nivar – in the next 24 hours.
The system is expected to bring heavy rains to Chennai and neighboring districts starting Tuesday.
“The storm is likely to move toward the Tamil nadu – Puducherry Coast and crossing between Karaikal and Mamallapuram by November 25 in the afternoon, ”said S Balachandran, Deputy Director General of the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) -Chennai.
On Sunday, the IMD issued a warning of extremely heavy rains in isolated locations over Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Pudukottai, Cuddalore, Ariyalur, Perambalur districts and the Karaikal area and heavy to very heavy rains in isolated locations over Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Ramanathapuram, Sivaganga, Trichy, Kallakurichi, Villupuram, Tiruvannamalai, Ranipet, Vellore and Tirupattur and Puducherry Districts. Heavy rains are likely to occur in isolated parts of Chengalpet district.
