The interaction of the meteorological system with the land mass has slowed its movement and intensity, says an official
Cyclone Burevi weakened into a deep depression at 5.30pm on Thursday. The deep depression will move to the west-southwest and will cross the districts of Ramanathapuram and Thoothukudi between Thursday night and Friday morning, with a wind speed of 50 to 60 km / h, with gusts of 70 km / h. h.
It is very likely to weaken further into a depression, with wind speeds of 40 to 50 km / h, on Friday morning.
S. Balachandran, Deputy Director General for Meteorology for Chennai, said that the interaction of the meteorological system with the land mass had slowed its movement and intensity. It will now deal less damage. In addition to the southern parts of Tamil Nadu, the central parts of the state would also receive good rains.
“We hope that places like Tiruchi, Kallakurichi, Pudukkottai and Thanjavur will rain well. The rain belt has even spread to the northern parts of the state. Although cyclone Nivar had benefited the northern region, this system will help eliminate the deficit of rainfall in the central and southern parts ”.
In the last 24 hours, which ended at 8.30am on Thursday, most places in Tamil Nadu saw rain. Vedaranyam in Nagapattinam district recorded very heavy rainfall of up to 20 cm, followed by Karaikal with 16 cm of rainfall.
A single day’s rain helped reduce the state’s overall rain deficit by 4%. On Thursday, Tamil Nadu’s overall rainfall was 32.4 cm, 12% less than normal seasonal rainfall since October 1.
Regarding subsequent weather systems, Balachandran said it was only a cyclonic circulation over the Malay Peninsula, extending up to 5.8 km above mean sea level. “It is located in the south of Sri Lanka. It may not have much of an impact in Tamil Nadu. We are tracking alterations in the climate, ”he said.
Parts of Chennai continued to receive rain on Thursday. The Department of Meteorology has forecast thunderstorms, with intermittent to moderate rainfall, in the city through Saturday.
Meanwhile, Union Interior Minister Amit Shah spoke with Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami by phone on Thursday and assured him of all possible help from the Center.
“I have spoken with Tamil Nadu CM Shri @EPSTamilNadu and Kerala CM Shri @vijayanpinarayi after Cyclone Burevi. The Modi government is committed to all possible support to help the people of Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Several NDRF teams are already deployed in both states, ”Mr. Shah tweeted later.
