New Delhi:
Cyclone Burevi has weakened into a deep depression and will cross the coast of Tamil Nadu on the morning of December 4, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said today.
The IMD had previously predicted that Burevi, which crossed the coast of Sri Lanka on Wednesday night, would hit the coast of Tamil Nadu as a cyclonic storm.
Deep depression is a stage of formation or disintegration of cyclones.
“Cyclonic storm Burevi over the Gulf of Mannar weakened into a deep depression on December 3 and is off the coast of the Ramanathapuram district, about 20 kilometers southwest of Pamban and 210 km east-northeast of Kanyakumari”, IMD’s Cyclone Warning Division said tonight. .
The associated wind speed is about 55 to 65 km / h, with gusts of up to 75 km / h, it added.
The deep depression would move west-southwest and cross the districts of Ramanathapuram and Thoothukudi between Thursday night and early Friday morning with a wind speed of 50 to 60 km / h, with gusts of up to 70 km / h. h.
It is also very likely that it will weaken further and turn into a depression (with a wind speed of 40 to 50 km / h, with gusts of up to 60 km / h) on Friday.
IMD has already issued a red alert for southern Tamil Nadu and southern Kerala.
IMD Director General Mrutunjay Mohapatra said that southern Tamil Nadu had received poor rainfall and this weather system is expected to help bridge the gap.
Tamil Nadu and other parts of southern India receive rains due to the northeast monsoon from October to December. Cyclone formation in the Bay of Bengal during this period is also common.
