Cyclone Burevi to hit near Kanyakumari on December 4: IMD

Cyclonic storm Burevi formed in the Bay of Bengal, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) announced on Tuesday night.

Named for the Maldives, this is the second cyclone to form in the southwestern region of the Bay of Bengal in a week. Burevi is also the third cyclone to form in the northern Indian Ocean region, which comprises the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea.

On November 23, Cyclone Gati, formed in the Arabian Sea, hit the coast of Somalia. Shortly after Severe cyclone Nivar, formed in the Bay of Bengal, hit Karaikal in Puducherry November 25.

Updating on Cyclone Burevi, the Met department’s special bulletin said: “The cyclone is located 400 km east-southeast of Trincomalee in Sri Lanka and 800 km east-southeast of Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu. It will intensify over the next 12 hours, crossing near Trincomalee on Wednesday afternoon or evening. “

The storm, which will maintain its intensity and a wind speed of 75 to 85 km / h with gusts of 95 km / h until December 4, will emerge near the Gulf of Mannar on Thursday morning.

“It will move west and cross Kanyakumari and Pamban on the morning of December 4,” IMD officials said.

As the storm approaches, a ‘red’ alert (take action) was issued for extremely heavy rains for Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi and Tenkasi districts in Tamil Nadu and Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta and Alappuzha in Kerala districts for Wednesday and Thursday.

Heavy rains will continue over the southernmost districts of both states through December 4.
