Cyclone Burevi: IMD issues red alert in four districts of Kerala for December 3


Cyclone Burevi, the cyclone that formed in the southwestern region of the Bay of Bengal a week after Cyclone Nivar, is likely to cross the coast of Sri Lanka tonight. India’s meteorology department has issued a red alert in four districts of Kerala: Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta and Alappuzha for December 3 in sight of Burevi.

Here are the latest updates on Cyclone Burevi

1. At 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, the cyclonic storm remained about 110 km east-northeast of Sri Lanka, 330 km east-southeast of Panban (Tamil Nadu) and 520 km east-northeast of Kanyakumari (Tamil Nadu ) said the IMD in its newsletter.

2. Likely to move almost west-northwest thereafter, emerging into the Gulf of Mannar and contiguous Comorin area on the morning of December 3.

3. Around noon on December 3, the storm with a wind speed of 70-80 gusts at 90 km / h would have the center very close to Pamban.

4. It would then move almost west-southwest through the Pamban area in the afternoon and cross the southern coast of Tamil Nadu between Pamban and Kanyakumari during the night of December 2 and early December 4 in the morning with a Wind speed 70-80 gusts at 90 km / h.

5. Heavy or very heavy rains are likely to occur in some locations with isolated extremely heavy rains in southern Tamil Nadu (Kanniyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Tenkasi, Ramanathapuram and Sivagangai) on December 2-3; over southern Kerala (Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta and Alappuzah) on December 3 and isolated heavy to very heavy rains probably over southern Tamil Nadu on December 2 and 4 and southern Kerala on December 3 and 4 .

6. Heavy to very heavy rains are also likely to occur in northern Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Mahe, Karaikal and northern Kerala on 2 and 3 December, and heavy rains are likely to occur on the southern coast of Andhra Pradesh on December 2-3 and Lakshadweep on December 3-4.

7. The Thiruvananthapuram district administration has issued a special alert in 48 villages in the wake of Cyclone Burevi that has formed in the Bay of Bengal.

8. Burevi is unlikely to be as intense as Nivar, said IMD CEO Mrutunjay Mohapatra.

9. On Wednesday, Prime Minister Modi spoke with the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, E Palaniswami, and the Chief Minister of Kerala, Pinarayi Vijayan, and assured them of all possible support.

10. In Kerala, 697 people from 175 families have been transferred to aid camps, Vijayan said, adding that another 2,489 camps have been identified. Eight teams from the NDRF have arrived in the state. The Air Force and Navy are ready for rescue and relief operations.
