Cyclone Burevi: Flooding of lower suburban areas in Chennai

More rains are expected in the state through Saturday.

Many low-lying and suburban areas of Chennai were flooded in the wake of Cyclone Burevi, just a week after recovering from the impact of Cyclone Nivar. Parts of Velachery, KK Nagar, Shollinganur, Pallikaranai, Nandanam, Ayanavaram, Perambur, Puliyanthope and Chitlapakkam are experiencing flooding in Chennai. According to a bulletin from the Indian Meteorological Department, Cyclone Burevi has turned into a deep depression and remains parked over the Gulf of Mannar near the coast of the Ramanathapuram district at 8.30am on Friday.

The deep depression is expected to remain stationary and weaken into depression within 8.30pm on Friday. As a result, the IMD has forecast rain in most places, with heavy to very heavy rains with extremely heavy falls in isolated parts of Tamil Nadu on Friday and Saturday. As heavy rains are forecast through Saturday, many places in Chennai are likely to face flooding. Residents of Pallikaranai and Velachery have already started experiencing flooding of homes. They also face the problem of snakes, reptiles, and insects entering homes and residential areas.

The Kamarajar Salai in KK Nagar also experienced flooding, with ankle-deep water flooding the roads. Motorists were also seen wading through the waters with difficulty. The ground floors of the houses were also flooded in some streets. The Tamil Nadu Electricity Board also cut off electricity in KK Nagar to avoid adverse incidents.

One of Chennai’s main roads, Chamiers Road in Nandanam, was flooded due to heavy bouts of rain since Thursday night, making it difficult for motorists to navigate the street. Traffic was also affected at the Kathipara crossing as the rains flooded the streets.

On Thursday, Greater Chennai Corporation resolved eight of the 14 rain-related complaints received in control rooms, which came from residents in Tondiarpet, Madhavaram, Madipakkam, Perungudi and Pallikaranai.

As of Thursday, Tambaram received 90mm of rain, Tharamani 68mm, Nungambakkam 33mm, Perambur 32mm and Alandur 38mm. The highest rainfall of more than 30 cm was received in the Cuddalore district, and the Chidambaram Nataraja temple experienced flooding due to recent rains.
