Chennai: Tamil Nadu prepares for the impact of another cyclone, as cyclonic storm Burevi is set to cross the southern coast of the state between Kanniyakumari and Pamban during the night of December 3 (Thursday) and the early morning of December 4 (Friday) .

When Cyclone Burevi makes landfall off the coast of Tamil Nadu, it is likely to carry winds with speeds of 70 to 80 km / hr with gusts of 90 km / h.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said Wednesday in a bulletin that the impact of the cyclonic storm on the southern coastal districts of Tamil Nadu is highly likely to be observed as of Thursday morning, initially from the Ramanathapuram district. and then gradually from the Kanniyakumari district.

“The cyclonic storm ‘Burevi’ over the southwest of the Bay of Bengal moved towards the west-northwest with a speed of 18 km / h during the last six hours and was centered at 08:30 am IST today, 02 of December 2020, over the southwest of the Bay of Bengal, about 200 km east of Trincomalee (Sri Lanka), 420 km east-southeast of Pamban (India) and 600 km almost east-northeast of Kanniyakumari (India) .

“It is very likely that it will intensify even more during the next 12 hours. Most likely moving west-northwest and crossing the coast of Sri Lanka north of Trincomalee during the evening / night of December 2 as a cyclonic storm with a wind speed of 80-90 kmph with gusts of 100 kmph . It is very likely that it will move almost west-northwest thereafter, emerging into the Gulf of Mannar and the contiguous Comorin area on the morning of December 3, ”IMD said in a bulletin.

The meteorological department said the cyclonic storm with a wind speed of 70 to 80 km / h, with gusts of 90 km / h, would center very close to Pamban around noon on December 3 or Thursday.

IMD has issued a red warning for tomorrow for southern Tamil Nadu and southern Kerala, where heavy to very heavy rains are expected in most places. Additionally, extremely heavy rains are likely to occur in some places in these areas on the same date as well.

The alert has been issued for the districts of Ramanathapuram, Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, Kanniyakumari, Tenkasi and Sivagangai in southern Tamil Nadu and Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta and Alappuzah in southern Kerala.

Fishing operations have been completely suspended between December 2 and 5. According to IMD, fishermen should not venture into the southwest of the Bay of Bengal and along and off the east coast of Sri Lanka from 2 to 3 December; Comorin Area, Gulf of Mannar and southern Tamil Nadu-Kerala and western shores of Sri Lanka from December 2-4; and the Lakshadweep-Maldives area and the adjacent southeastern Arabian Sea from 3 to 5 December.

Cyclone Burevi Warning for Thiruvananthapuram

Meanwhile, Kerala’s Thiruvananthapuram district harvester Navjot Khosa said Cyclone Burevi is likely to hit Thiruvananthapuram district tomorrow.

“We have asked the fishermen to return and we have completely banned fishing and regulated movement in mountainous areas. We expect very heavy rains with wind speeds of 75 to 80 km / h ”, said the district collector.

“Yesterday, we had a special meeting of the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) with the defense forces that are stationed here. The unit chiefs of these forces attended the meeting and we planned strategies for rescue, relief and search operations if the need arose, ”he added.

“People who live along the coast and those who inhabit the catchment areas of three dams in the district, and along the banks of the rivers, have been placed on high alert,” the official said.
