Chennai: Just one day after Cyclone Nivar made landfall off the coasts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, another storm may be developing in the Bay of Bengal. The storm, if it develops, may move into Tamil Nadu and Puducherry and hit the coast on December 2.

The Tamil Nadu Disaster Management Authority said on Friday that an area of low pressure was expected to develop over the southeast of the Bay of Bengal and intensify further.

“It is very likely that a low pressure area will form over the southeast of the Bay of Bengal. It would be concentrated in a depression for the next 24 hours and it is very likely that it will intensify further and move westward and reach the shores of Tamil Nadu-Puducherry on December 2, “said the authority.

The news came a day after at least three people died in Tamil Nadu when very severe cyclonic storm Nivar made landfall around midnight Wednesday.

The storm uprooted more than 1,000 trees in the state and left several low-lying areas abandoned.

Nivar, which made landfall near Puducherry, gradually weakened as it crossed land.

Heavy rains were witnessed in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.

Andhra Pradesh also received a fair amount of rain under the influence of the cyclonic storm. One death was also reported by the state.

In Tamil Nadu, some 2.30 lakh people were evacuated to safety in relief camps.

Union Interior Minister Amit Shah said the MHA remained in contact with Tamil Nadu and Puducherry to address the situation.

“We are closely monitoring the situation in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry in the wake of Cyclone Nivar. I spoke with CM Shri @ EPSTamilNadu and CM Shri @VNarayanasami and secured all possible help from the center. NDRF teams are already on the ground to help to people in need, “he tweeted yesterday.
