Both boards highlighted the importance they place on the health and well-being of their players and staff, and jointly decided to close the tour without further matches. The teams are now exploring possible future dates for the series, which was scheduled to kick off the South African ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League campaign.

ECB Chief Executive Tom Harrison said: “We have always held that the well-being of our players and management is paramount. We were concerned about the potential impact that recent developments could have on the well-being of the touring group, and so on. In consultation with Cricket South Africa, we have made a joint decision to postpone the remaining games in this series, in the best interest of the well-being of the players. “

CSA Acting CEO Kugandrie Govender made comments echoing Harrison’s, saying, “Concern about the mental health impact of recent events on everyone involved is not something that we, as CSA or the ECB, let’s take it lightly, and the decision to postpone the tour is the most responsible and reasonable course of action for us. “

England claimed the previous series T20I 3-0 before a positive test for COVID-19 from a player from South Africa resulted in the postponement of the first ODI on Friday, December 4. A couple of unconfirmed positive tests, this time from the England field, led to the cancellation of the first rescheduled ODI on Sunday, December 6.

Sri Lanka is scheduled to arrive in South Africa later this month, and the teams will begin a two-match World Test Championship series on Saturday, December 26.
