Chennai Super Kings head coach Stephen Fleming reserved high praise for England’s all-rounder Sam Curran, who landed in the United Arab Emirates, trained for a day, entered the game XI and put on a show stellar in the season opener. Curran might not have made the game if CSK’s trusted all-rounder over the years, Dwayne Bravo, hadn’t come from CPL with a knee problem.
Fleming praised Curran’s attitude when under pressure and felt that he more than filled the great void left by the West Indies. Curran’s six-ball 18 ensured the Mumbai Indians did not pull off a late heist after choosing two fast wickets, from Ambati Rayudu and Ravindra Jadeja, during a tense phase in the chase.
“Losing Dwayne (Bravo) was a huge loss and Sam did a lot to fill that in,” Fleming told the CSK website. “What impressed us about Sam is his attitude to everything, the harder he gets, the better he gets, his comprehensive skill component and the fact that the captain could immediately trust him to get into a crucial moment and hit as did “.
“With the ball too, being a part of it right away, almost getting off the plane was a sign of his attitude and what he will bring to CSK in the years to come,” Fleming added.
Curran’s good start is particularly crucial for CSK because they have a very tight schedule at the start, which means that pushing Bravo back will take some time. Fleming revealed that Bravo is currently being monitored.
“Bravo is making progress; we are working closely to get him to 100 percent. We have three quick games in a row, so we will watch each game and monitor it every time we train. With Sam’s performance, it takes a little pressure off Bravo, but he’s one of the best in the world and having him in the selection equation is very important to us. ”
Fleming also felt the opening match between the 2019 finalists finally turned into a battle of attrition, and was glad that his team emerged on top having made fewer mistakes.
“It was great to add the points, two teams that were a little nervous after not playing for a while. It was always going to be almost a case of who was going to make the slightest mistake.”
