Covid surge: Maharashtra considers suspending Mumbai-Delhi rail and air services

The national capital has seen an increase in cases after Diwali. Delhi added 7,546 cases on Thursday, bringing its total count to 5,10,630 cases. As of Thursday, the number of active cases in Delhi stood at 43,221.

Mumbai, which was at the center of the pandemic not long ago, had 11,694 active cases by comparison. The sources said Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has ordered officials to “act swiftly” to contain a new wave of infections in the state.

The sources said that the CMO itself has directed officials to explore the option of reducing train and air services to Delhi to control a second wave of infections in the state. When contacted, Chief Secretary Sanjay Kumar confirmed that the measure was under discussion. “It is under discussion at this stage. But it is not finished yet. So far no proposal has been prepared, ”said Kumar. He added that this was one of several moves that are being considered as the state prepares to tackle a second wave. On Thursday, Maharashtra also witnessed an increase in cases, recording 5,535 cases, a maximum of 15 days. Cases in Mumbai also rose from 541 on Tuesday to 924 on Thursday.

Kumar also said that the state will further improve its health infrastructure and create more awareness among people to contain the spread of the virus. “We are much more prepared this time. But we are not taking risks, ”said Kumar, adding that the state’s community campaign against Covid-19, My family, my responsibility, will intensify in the coming days.

In Mumbai, the civic body has already launched a campaign to test street vendors, people who work in markets, bus drivers and drivers for potential propagators.
