The Center published on Tuesday a detailed clinical management protocol on Ayurveda and Yoga for the management of coronairus infection in asymptomatic patients and those showing mild symptoms, including the management of post-Covid complications with the use of traditional medicinal herbs.
The national protocol says that detailed recommendations are based on three aspects: empirical evidence and biological plausibility; emerging trends from ongoing clinical trials; and knowledge of Ayurvedic classics and experience of clinical practices.
However, the protocol states that it is only a “general warning” and that treating physicians “should use their judgment to select drugs based on the stage of the disease, the complex of symptoms and the availability of drugs.” It says: “The formulations recommended in this endeavor are in addition to the standard approaches of care and prevention, as well as other Ayurvedic approaches recommended for prevention before. People with moderate to severe COVID-19 may have an informed choice of treatment options. “
Referring to the protocol, Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted: “Commendable effort, which places emphasis on building immunity, staying healthy and strengthening the fight against Covid-19.”
Publishing the protocol, Health Minister Harsh Vardhan said: “This protocol dealing with preventive and prophylactic measures is a significant step not only in managing Covid-19, but also in making traditional knowledge relevant to solve the problems of modern times. ” The protocol recommends relaxation exercises, breathing exercises, pranayama and kriya as part of the yoga protocol for the “primary prevention” of Covid-19. It states that these should be practiced to improve respiratory and cardiac efficiency, reduce stress and anxiety, and enhance immunity.
As prophylactic care for the high risk population and primary contacts, the protocol recommends the medicinal herb ‘Ashwagandha’ and ‘Guduchi Ghana Vati’, a preparation based on aqueous extract of the Ayurvedic herb Guduchi (moon seed with heart leaves) . A dose of extract of 500 mg or 1-3 grams of powder is recommended twice a day with warm water for a month. He also recommends 10 grams of ‘Chyawanaprash’ with warm water or milk once a day.

In asymptomatic patients, the protocol again recommends Guduchi Ghana Vati and Guduchi with Pippali, the long pepper. It says they are recommended to “prevent the progression of the disease” to a symptomatic and severe form and to “improve the rate of recovery.”
In the case of Guduchi with Pippali, 375 mg daily with warm water for 15 days is recommended.
In patients with mild symptoms, the protocol recommends ‘Guduchi’ with ‘Pippali’ and 500 mg of AYUSH 64, twice a day for 15 days. It is said to be for the symptomatic management of fever, headache, tiredness, dry cough, sore throat, and nasal congestion.
The protocol recommends 10 mg of ‘Vasavaleha’ for patients showing symptoms of hypoxia and 10 ml of liquid ‘Kanakasava’ for patients showing mild symptoms of dyspnea. He recommends ‘Ashwagandha’, ‘Chyawanprash’ and the multi-herb formulation ‘rasayana churna’ for post-infection treatment to prevent lung complications such as fibrosis.
