With 1,138 new Covid-19 deaths reported nationwide on Sunday, the total number of patients who have succumbed to the viral infection in the country has reached around 80,000 (79,752) in the past six months.
The first death from Covid-19 in India was reported on March 12, in South India. Maharashtra continues to report the highest number of Covid-19-related deaths in the country, with 416 patients dying on Sunday alone, bringing the total number of deaths in the state to 29,531.

Another state most affected in terms of total number of deaths is Tamil Nadu with 8,381 accumulated deaths so far and 74 new deaths reported in a single day. Karnataka reported the second highest number of new deaths (104), bringing the death toll from Covid-19 in the state to 7,265.
India’s fatality rate (CFR), the proportion of people who have died from the disease among all people diagnosed with it, has steadily improved and currently stands at 1.64%, which is among the highest. lowest in the world.
The global CFR is currently almost double the Indian CFR at 3.18%. “Our goal is to reduce the country’s CFR to 1% or less. Most of the deaths and cases are concentrated in about 10 states, which have our special focus when it comes to containment measures, ”said a senior Health Ministry official, who asked not to be named.
The Center has directed states to focus on those districts that report a high fatality rate and an urgent need to refine and strengthen the approach and strategies related to testing, contact tracing, surveillance, containment, home isolation, availability of ambulances. , hospital beds, oxygen, treatment protocols, etc.
“There are some states that have certain districts that are not working well, it is necessary to investigate the specific problems of those districts in order to better contain the spread of the disease,” added the official from the Ministry of Health.
While both the center and state governments are taking steps to reduce transmission of the disease, the total number of new cases reported each day is close to 100,000.
On Sunday, 93,214 new cases were reported across the country, bringing the total number of positive Covid-19 cases in the country to about 5 million (4,844,977).
Maharashtra also has the highest number of positive Covid-19 cases in the country, with 22,543 people reporting positive from the state on Sunday, bringing its total count to 1,060,308.
Andhra Pradesh is second with 567,123 cases reported in a single day, followed by Karnataka with 459,445 cases.
