AHMEDABAD: Officials at the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation have admitted that there has been an increase in corona cases due to the Diwali festival and that people were violating social distancing guidelines.
A senior AMC official said they had anticipated a return to the June situation when Covid was at its peak in the city.
A senior officials meeting was held on Wednesday chaired by Dr. Rajiv Kumar Gupta, the additional chief secretary for forests and environment, who was also charged with managing Covid in the city of Ahmedabad. Gupta, after the meeting, said messages were spreading on social media that the city was heading toward closure. He said: “These are just rumors and the administration was not thinking of imposing another blockade on the city.”
Gupta said that during the festival people would go out in great numbers to shop and even go for walks. During these days, social distancing and the use of a mask were neglected. Also due to the holiday spirit, people went out to meet relatives in other districts and some even came to Ahmedabad to meet their relatives and friends.
All of this movement has led to an increase in Covid cases, he said. During the review meeting it was reported that the city has 2,848 vacancies. This is 40% of the total Covid beds in the city. There are 2,347 vacant beds in seven government hospitals in the city and in the 76 private hospitals designated by Covid there are 501 vacant beds.
He said that there are 500 patients being treated in the city and these patients are from neighboring Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. He said beds are available at SVP hospital, Asarwa Civil Hospital, Sola Civil hospital and even private hospitals.
He said that to serve the people there are 900 mobile medical vans and also 550 Sanjivanivan corona and also 150 Danvantri Mobile Medical cans and 100 vans of 104 fever aid and 100 Vadil Sukhakari yojna (scheme to control the elderly) are operational in the city.
He further said that in every 2 km there is a Covid testing facility and there are more than 200 places where one can get tested. This is a great achievement for the city. He said there are 3,000 survey teams that have been conducting a survey of 1.8 lakhs of households and 10 lakhs of population a day. He said that due to active surveillance, the corporation has saved several lives.
