The district administration withdrew an order to close two night markets in Nangloi, west Delhi, for violating COVID-19 security measures, hours after it was issued, authorities said Monday.

The Punjabi Basti Market and the Janta Market in Nangloi were closed until November 30 through an order from the Executive Director and ADM of the West Delhi District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) and teams of district officials supported by the municipal corporation and police personnel took sealing measures on Sunday. .

However, the closure order was withdrawn hours later, as the Delhi government’s proposal to regulate markets amid the pandemic is pending at the Center.

“The market closure order has been withdrawn because a proposal from the Delhi government for the regulation of the markets in light of the increase in COVID-19 is pending with the central government. District officials can take action against people for infringement, but they cannot seal off an entire market, ”said a senior government official.

Amid an outbreak of COVID-19 cases in Delhi, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had last week requested the Center’s power to impose restrictions on those markets that may emerge as COVID-19 hotspots.

The prime minister who had an interaction with the market associations last Friday had said that his government does not want to close any markets.
