In good news for millions of Indians, Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan said on Thursday (September 17) that the COVID-19 vaccine will be available in India in early 2021.

“Like other countries, India is also making efforts. Three candidate vaccines are in different phases. Under the Prime Minister’s leadership, a group of experts is analyzing it and advanced planning is underway. We are hopeful that by early next year there will be a vaccine available in India, ”said Harsh Vardhan at Rajya Sabha on Thursday.

It should be noted that clinical trials of two indigenous vaccines for Zydus Cadila and Bharat Biotech are currently underway, and both have completed phase 1 testing.

In particular, the Serum Institute of India (SII) is set to restart its phase two and three clinical trials for the COVID-19 vaccine after receiving the go-ahead from the Comptroller General of Medicines of India (DCGI).

According to ANI, the SII had requested permission from the DGCI to restart the re-registration procedure for the COVID-19 vaccine that is being developed by AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford following the recommendations of the Data Security Monitoring Board (DSMB).

The Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) and Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories Limited have agreed to cooperate in the clinical trials and distribution of the Sputnik V vaccine in India. Sputnik V was developed by the Gamaleya Scientific Research Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology on August 11.

Meanwhile, a record rise of 97,894 infections in a single day brought India’s COVID-19 coronavirus count to more than 51 lakh, while the number of people who have recovered from the disease surpassed 40 lakh on Thursday, according to data from the Union Ministry of Health.

Total coronavirus cases amounted to 51,18,253, while the death toll rose to 83,198 and the virus claimed 1,132 lives in a 24-hour span, data updated at 8 a.m. showed. Total recoveries increased to 40,25,079 while active COVID-19 cases crossed 10 lakh for the first time.
