The Union Ministry of Health revised its discharge guidelines for patients with coronavirus disease (Covid-19) on Friday, requiring that only patients who have developed a serious illness or compromised immunity have a negative result through a swab test before they are allowed to leave the hospital or a Care Center.
The other category of patients, including very mild, mild, pre-symptomatic and moderate cases, do not need to be evaluated before discharge.
The revised discharge guidelines contrast with previous government rules that a laboratory-confirmed case had to be tested on the 14th once and then again within 24 hours: if both results are negative, then the patient is on conditions of being discharged from the health center.
When contacted about the revised guidelines, the joint secretary of the ministry of health, Lav Agarwal, said: “The ministry has issued detailed guidelines depending on the clinical condition of the patient to be followed.”
The revised discharge policy is aligned with the guidelines on the 3-level Covid-19 health centers and the categorization of patients according to clinical severity: mild, moderate and severe.
“For mild, very mild and pre-symptomatic cases admitted to a Covid Care Center, they will undergo regular monitoring of temperature and pulse. The patient can be discharged after 10 days of onset of symptoms and if not He has a fever for 3 days. There will be no need for pre-discharge testing. At discharge, the patient will be advised to follow the isolation at home for an additional 7 days, “the revised guidelines say.
“After discharge from the center, if symptoms of fever, cough, or shortness of breath develop again, you will contact the COVID Care Center or the State Help Line or 1075. Your health will again be monitored by teleconference on the 14th.” .
Cases clinically classified as moderate cases will undergo a control of body temperature and oxygen saturation. If the fever resolves in three days and the patient maintains saturation above 95% for the following 4 days (without oxygen support), the patient will be discharged 10 days after the onset of symptoms in the event that no fever without fever-reducing drugs, no dyspnea and no need for oxygen. Again, testing will not be required before discharge, and home isolation for 7 days with close health monitoring is suggested.
