Covid-19 status check at critical points Ahmedabad and Surat show spike the day after hard shutdown

One day after a total blockade was announced in Ahmedabad, the Gujarat coronavirus epicenter recorded 275 new coronavirus cases out of a total of 388 reported across the state.

The total number of positive cases in the state reached 7,013 on Thursday, a senior health official quoted by PTI said.

Ahmedabad also accounted for 23 deaths out of a total of 29 recorded in the state in the past 24 hours, followed by four in Surat, the second most affected city, which will also enter a partial block mode starting Saturday.

A full shutdown was announced as of midnight Wednesday in the city of Ahmedabad, accounting for more than 70% of all cases (7013) and deaths (more than 400).

Everything has been closed in Ahmedabad, except for ATMs and health facilities. The administration has also banned all stores except those that sell milk and medications. Nodal officers have been appointed for each zone to guarantee home delivery of essential goods.

Since March 19, when the state’s first case was reported, an analysis of official Covid data from Gujarat reveals that the spread rate has increased in the state after hitting the 4,000 mark. The data also shows that the death rate has steadily increased from 3.7% (when the state had only 1,000 cases) to 4.3% (in 4,000 cases) to 5.9% (in more than 6,000 cases).

One of the officials from the new team that took over Ahmedabad said the blockade was not properly enforced and initially, there was laxity in identifying people infected with the virus.

“In the first week to ten days, only those who visited the hospital with Covid symptoms were evaluated. There were no random tests, “he said.

Another Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation official said the government reacted only when the cases were reported from locations outside the walled city. Many residents of the city’s walled areas were found to be allowed to move around Ahmedabad, prompting the spread of the virus.

Several of the super spreaders in the city were vegetable vendors and supermarket workers. Gujarat Prime Minister Vijay Rupani, in an interview with HT, attributed the large number of cases to a large number of international and domestic travelers. He also said that Tablighi Jamaat members were not tracked in time upon their return from Delhi Markaz, which caused the spread of the disease.

Experts, however, say the cases increased due to initial laxity and the inability to impose a serious blockade.

While the Ahmedabad shutdown is likely to show results after a few days, the administration announced the closure of all stores selling vegetables and fruit in Surat also from May 9-14, PTI said.

Surat municipal commissioner Banchhanidhi Pani said that step was necessary to stem the spread of the disease, as large crowds gathered in vegetable stores without respecting physical distance regulations.
