NEW DELHI: The number of daily Covid-19 cases in India, after peaking at 1,755 the day before, dropped slightly to 1,433 on Friday, mainly as Maharashtra reported a nearly 50% drop from the record for Thursday 778.
However, the number of virus-related deaths rose to what is probably the highest single-day number of 54, bringing the total to 780 so far, translating to a case-fatality rate of around 3.2% . Maharashtra continued to report the highest number of deaths, with 18 on Friday, Gujarat (15), Madhya Pradesh (8), Rajasthan (4) and Delhi (3).
Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh recorded two deaths each, while one death was recorded in Uttar Pradesh and Kerala.

On the positive side, 5,154 people, 21% of all positive cases, have recovered from the disease, the data shows.
Maharashtra, the state most affected by a wide margin, reported 394 new cases on Friday, bringing its count to 6,817. The state now also has the highest number of patients recovered in 957, although its recovery rate remains much lower than the national average.
In contrast, Delhi has one of the best recovery rates with 857 patients out of 2,514 who have been successfully treated for the disease. However, the city continued to report an increase in viral infection with 138 new cases on Friday.
The number of Covid-19 deaths in Delhi is 53, of which 23 deaths have occurred in the Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) hospital alone. Hospitals are emerging as new hot spots for Covid-19 in the city, and more and more healthcare workers test positive. Three Safdarjung hospital doctors tested positive for the disease on Friday, the sources said.
Gujarat showed a slight drop in new cases with 191 confirmed positive cases. The state’s Covid-19 count is 2,815, the second highest in the country, and shows the fastest growth among large states in recent days.
