New Delhi: Amid rising coronavirus infections in the country, AIIMS director Dr. Randeep Guleria warned authorities that the second wave could peak this month and that India needed a mini-lockdown to contain the spread. of deadly disease.
In a message, the AIIMS director had stressed on Friday that the situation in the country regarding the Covid-19 pandemic is quite worrying as cases continue to increase steadily, especially in recent days.
Dr. Guleria, who is also a member of the national task force for the management of Covid-19, said that people did not wear masks or maintain social distance despite a sharp increase in cases.
“It took several months for the Covid-19 count in the country to cross the 70,000 mark during the first wave. This time, we are seeing a very sharp curve. A similar situation is being witnessed in the national capital, “Dr. Guleria quoted the Times of India as saying.
Covid situation in India
The country has been seeing a steady increase in Covid-19 cases for more than three weeks. India had reported 89,129 new Covid-19 cases and 714 coronavirus-related deaths in the past 24 hours on Saturday, the union’s health ministry reported.
After 44,202 people recovered from Covid-19, the cumulative recoveries in the country crossed the one crore mark (1,15,69,241).
Maharashtra continues to report the highest number of daily cases in the country. The state reported 49,447 new Covid cases and 277 deaths yesterday. The death toll from Covid-19 rose to 55,656.
India administers more than 7.3 cr doses of vaccine
The vaccination campaign in the country was accelerated and the government allowed the inoculation of all people over 45 years of age. The cumulative number of doses of vaccines administered in the country has crossed the 7.3 crore mark, according to the Union Ministry of Health.
“In total, 7,30,54,295 doses of vaccine have been administered through 11,53,614 sessions, according to the interim report until 7 am today. These include 89,32,642 TS (first dose), 52,96,666 TS ( second dose), 95, 71,610 PDA (1st dose) and 39.92,094 PDA (2nd dose) and 4,45,77,337 (1st dose) and 6,83,946 (2nd dose) beneficiaries older than 45 years ”, said the ministry.
