According to the report presented by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on May 10 (Sunday), India reported 62,939 cases of COVID-19 as of Sunday, and only Maharashtra reported 20,228 of these infections. For the third day in a row, India reported an increase in the number of cases by more than 3,000 as the number reached 2,109, according to a report by the Maharashtra Department of Public Health.

The number of cases in India began to increase in the week between March 21-28. A week later, an increase in cases was observed in Maharashtra. However, the largest daily increase in the number of cases across India was reported on May 6, with 3,900 new infections.

Compared to the global mortality rate, which is 6.9 percent, India’s toll rate to currently confirmed cases is 3.35 percent.

The highest mortality rate was recorded in West Bengal at 9.57 percent, where 1,786 cases and 171 deaths have been reported. On May 5, the Interministerial Central Team (IMCT) sent to the state had said that the death rate in West Bengal was 12.8 percent. This figure remained lower in Maharashtra, where the death rate was 3.85 percent, higher than the national average. Of the 128 new COVID-19 deaths in India, 48 were reported in the financial capital of India.

With 7,796 infections, Gujarat reported a death rate of 6.05 percent. The figure in Delhi, which has the third highest number of cases in the country, stood at 1.12 percent.

Tamil Nadu, however, reported a death rate of 0.67, despite having the fourth highest number of cases at 6,535. Kerala, which was praised for crushing the curve, has witnessed four deaths among the 505 confirmed cases so far, bringing the death rate to 0.79 percent. Bihar and Odisha, with 591 and 294 confirmed cases respectively, have also reported figures of less than 1 percent.

In Maharashtra, Mumbai is the most affected city, with 12,864 cases and 489 deaths. Pune, Thane and Navi Mumbai have so far reported 1,975, 800 and 780 cases, respectively. While COVID-19 has been observed to have a greater impact in the elderly and those with comorbidities, the highest number of cases of COVID-19 in Maharashtra has been reported in the age group of 21-30 years. According to the report, at least 4,197 in the age group have contracted the virus.

Of the total infections in Maharashtra, 62 percent of men contracted it, while 38 percent were women. Furthermore, comorbidities were present in 72 percent of cases. Of the 2.25,524 samples analyzed, 92 percent gave a positive result. Of the 12,823 patients undergoing treatment, 2 percent are critical and 79 percent are asymptomatic.

India, however, continues to handle the outbreak better than some countries, reporting 56,342 cases in week 15 of the outbreak. At that time, the United States reported 9.83,457 cases, France 1.28,121 cases and China 84,341 cases. India, behind South Korea, credited with effectively fighting the coronavirus pandemic, has reported 13,385 cases in week 15.
