The Federation of New Delhi Merchants has said it received a notice from the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) to pay the license fees, while stressing that the government had advised landlords to give up rent amid the crash due to Covid-19.

Markets in the NDMC area have closed since the closing announcement was made last month.

“We received notices and, curiously, with a proposed 10% increase in rates. This is unnecessary, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Delhi Prime Minister Arvind Kejriwal have said that landlords should give tenants relief for a rental period. On the other hand, government agencies are charging fees, ”Dinesh Gaur, president of the New Delhi Merchants Federation, told ANI.

“We are obeying the closing orders. Our stores have been closed for almost a month, we are paying money to our staff and then how can we pay the fees when the government is advising and then must be followed by the government first, ”he said.

According to the Federation, there are 25 markets, including Palika Bazar, Palika Palace, Sarojni Nagar Market, Kasturba Nagar Market that are under the jurisdiction of the NDMC, and approximately 5,000 merchants are affected by the closure.
