KOCHI: The Kerala High Court suspended Tuesday for two months the implementation of the state government order to deduct the wages of government employees for fighting the Covid-19 pandemic in the state.
Judge Bechu Kurian Thomas issued the provisional order considering a batch of petitions filed by a section of employees and their organizations challenging the government’s decision.
In his order, the government had said that the salary of state government employees for six days each month would be deducted over the next five months.
“This would apply to employees of all state companies, public sector companies, quasi-government organizations, universities, etc. in the state,” the order said.
However, he had made it clear that there will be no pay cuts for staff earning less than Rs 20,000 per month.
The order also stated that ministers, MLA, various board members, members of local institutions, members of various commissions would receive 30% less salary for one year.
