Cities around the world that once emerged as hot spots for the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) have begun to fall into the clutches of the virus again.
New York, London and Turin are among the cities that have been put under strict lockdown ahead of an impending second wave, as experts believe the second wave can prove as deadly as the first.
More than 53.85 million people have been infected with the disease worldwide and 1.29 million have lost their lives, according to real-time statistics provider Worldometer.

New Delhi: The Indian capital recorded its highest death toll from Covid-19 on Thursday, with 104 people losing their lives due to the virus. In the past week, the daily count once crossed the 8,500 mark in the capital city and more than 7,000 cases were recorded every day. As the city grapples with the third wave of the virus, experts believe air pollution after the Diwali festival may contribute to worsening the situation.
New York: More than 18,000 people lost their lives during the first wave of Covid-19 in New York. In the last 24 hours, the city has registered 4,821 new infections. Mayor Bill de Blasio has announced that schools will remain closed in the city and that restaurants and cafes will be able to remain open until 10 pm. The United States is the country most affected by the coronavirus, followed by India.
Turin: Due to the increase in coronavirus cases in Turin, the government approved an order to close bars and restaurants at 6 p.m. This decision has resulted in widespread protest and unrest across the country.
London: London, one of the hardest hit cities in Britain, recorded 3,554 coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours. The country has been under lockdown for more than a month, but the cases have not decreased. Britain accounts for the bulk of coronavirus deaths in Europe. More than 50,000 people have died from the disease in the country.
Sao Paulo: The most densely populated city in Brazil and one of the most populous cities in the world, Sao Paulo has been a hotspot since May. Here, more than 1.11 million cases and 39,311 deaths have been registered. Brazil is the third most affected country in the world.
Moscow: The capital of Russia registers more than 20,000 cases of coronavirus daily. The first wave of Covid-19 ended here on May 11, after which the number of infections began to decline. Up to 7,361 deaths have been recorded here. Russia is the fifth country most affected by the coronavirus in the world.
