NEW DELHI: Five states, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, UP and Tamil Nadu, lead the burden of Covid-19 in the country and account for 56% of the 69,921 confirmed cases and 65.4% of the 819 new deaths registered Monday.
Together, these states have 62.2% of the total of 7,85,996 active cases, although they also represent 58% of the total recoveries registered in the last 24 hours, according to data from the Ministry of Health. The three main states, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, have 48.6% of active cases.
Maharashtra only had 24.7% of active cases and more than 22% of new deaths on Monday. West Bengal and Punjab are also seeing a significant increase with 52 and 49 deaths, respectively, on Monday.

Delhi has a death toll of 4,444, more than UP, which has recorded 3,486 deaths so far. However, Delhi recorded 18 deaths on Monday, compared with 63 in UP.
The five high-burden states contributed 60% of the total 36,91,166 confirmed cases reported across the country as of Monday. Of this, Maharashtra alone witnessed more than 21% of the cases.
Five states have recorded the largest addition to new cases: Maharashtra (11,852), Andhra Pradesh (10,004), Karnataka (6,495), Tamil Nadu (5,956), and UP (4,782). Together, they represent 56% of the new confirmed cases.
