Eight states are reporting the majority of daily deaths related to India’s coronavirus disease (Covid-19), government data shows.
With 444 new deaths reported nationwide on Sunday, the total number of people who succumbed to the viral infection in the country reached 137,173.
Approximately 71% of new deaths from Covid-19 are in Delhi, Maharashtra, West Bengal, Haryana, Punjab, Kerala, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan.
With 89 deaths reported on Sunday, Maharashtra had the highest number of new deaths. Delhi is close behind with 68 deaths and West Bengal reported 54 deaths. Of the eight states, these three states currently report the most deaths due to Covid-19.

Additionally, at least 22 states are showing the fatality rate (CFR), which is the number of people who die out of the total number of reported positive cases, less than the national average which at this time has fallen to 1.45%.
India’s CFR has been steadily decreasing. From the national CFR of about 1.98% about three months ago in August, it is now down to 1.45%.
India also continues to have one of the lowest deaths per million people in the world.
“Focused measures to ensure a low and manageable death rate have resulted in daily death figures of less than 500,” the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare tweeted Monday morning.
India has also significantly increased its Covid-19 testing capacity, and recently the number of tests per million population has crossed the 100,000 mark.
On average, India has been running one million tests for Covid-19 in a single day for at least three months. The Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR), which spearheads India’s Covid-19 testing initiative, has so far approved 2,165 labs across the country to perform the tests.
Of all these laboratories, 1,175 laboratories are in the government sector and 990 in the private sector.
