Covid-19: China Promises Aid in Rapid Test Kits, Government Waiting for ICMR Hearings | India News

NEW DELHI: Amid concerns raised here about the quality of rapid test kits purchased in China, the Chinese embassy here said it will maintain “close communication” with Indian agencies and provide them with the necessary assistance on the matter.
Government sources here said they will wait to receive news from ICMR on whether or not the kits were defective before making a decision to pursue the matter with Beijing. The government is cautiously making progress on the matter as it continues in the process of acquiring vital medical equipment from China in its fight against Covid-19.
The ICMR “clarified” to senior government officials Tuesday that these kits can show positive reports only after 7 days (the time it takes for a body to produce detectable antibodies). Major government sources also said that ICMR was directly involved in purchasing the kits.

As the WHO says, antibody tests have limited utility for clinical diagnosis because they cannot quickly diagnose an acute infection to inform the actions necessary to determine the required treatment. However, the agency encourages work to establish its utility in disease surveillance and epidemiological research.
“Reports noted on rapid test kits. # China attaches great importance to the quality of exported medical products. It will maintain close communication with the #India agency concerned and provide the necessary assistance,” the Chinese embassy spokesperson tweeted.
However, some of these test kits, which can apparently help confirm the virus’s reach, have struggled even in the US. USA According to a report published in the New York Times, US authorities, having ordered many of those kits from China, have warned that some of the exporting companies may be making false claims about their products.
Official sources here said it was not a matter of obtaining rapid test kits or other equipment from companies that are not certified exporters. The Foreign Ministry took up ICMR’s demands through its mission in Beijing, after which the Chinese government recommended “qualified” companies.
The Chinese embassy had also previously said in a statement that it wanted foreign buyers to choose products certified by the Chinese regulatory authorities and with “production qualifications” when importing relevant products. This guideline has been followed by the Indian mission. India expects about 20 flights from China with medical supplies this week. In addition to rapid antibody tests, the government also purchased RT-PCR test kits, thermometers, and EPP from China.
