India’s COVID-19 count crossed the gloomy milestone of 70,000 today. States continued to record more than 3,500 new coronavirus cases even on Monday. The total number of coronavirus cases in India increased to 70,756, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. Maharashtra added more than 1,000 new cases for the sixth consecutive day.

The number of COVID-19 related deaths increased to 2,293 when 87 people died in the past 24 hours. Maharashtra confirmed 36 deaths on Monday, bringing the state’s death toll to 868.

The total number of active coronavirus patients in India increased to 46,008. On the positive side, almost 31% of coronavirus patients recovered from the disease.

Tamil Nadu witnessed the largest increase in coronavirus count in the past 24 hours. Almost 800 people tested positive for the novel COVID-19. The coronavirus count in the state was 8,002. The Tamil Nadu government attributed “aggressive evidence” behind this sudden increase in cases.

There was a slight decrease in new cases of COVID-19 in Maharashtra. The state recorded 1,200 new cases in the past 24 hours. The total number of coronavirus cases in Maharashtra increased to 23,401. Maharashtra was the only state in India that reported more than 20,000 coronavirus cases.

As India enters the last week of national closure, Prime Minister Narendra Modi asked the state’s chief ministers to decide on the way forward. “I ask all of you to share with me before May 15, a comprehensive strategy on how each of you would want to deal with the lockdown regime in your particular states,” Modi told the state ministers during a video conference.

India has a double challenge: reducing the rate of disease transmission and gradually increasing public activities while adhering to the rules of social distancing, he added.
