COVID-19 cases in India cross 81,000, the death toll reaches 2,649. State account

India’s COVID-19 count crossed the bleak milestone of 80,000 today when states added 3,967 new cases in the past 24 hours. Delhi witnessed the highest peak in the daily coronavirus count. On Thursday, 472 people tested positive for the virus in the national capital. The total number of coronavirus cases in the country increased to 81,970, according to the ministry of health and family welfare.

The number of deaths in India increased to 2,649 with 100 deaths recorded in the last 24 hours. At least 54 deaths were reported in Maharashtra on Thursday, bringing the number of deaths in the state to more than 1,000.

There were 51,401 active coronavirus patients in the country. Almost 33% of the total choroanvirus cases, more than 27,920 people, have recovered from the disease.

Maharashtra witnessed a large increase in the COVID-19 count when the state detected more than 1,600 new cases on Thursday. Mumbai only reported more than 14,000 coronavirus cases. Maharashtra was the only state in the country that reported more than 25,000 cases of COVID-19. The coronavirus infected 27,524 people in the state.

Tamil Nadu surpassed Gujarat as the state with the second highest COVID-19 case count. However, the state saw a decline in new coronavirus cases on Thursday. For the first time in a week, Tamil Nadu reported fewer than 500 cases of coronavirus on Thursday. The total number of coronavirus cases in the state was 9,674.

With nearly 500 cases, the coronavirus count in Delhi exceeded 8,000 marks. The national capital recorded nine recent deaths on Thursday. Deaths in Delhi were 115. Delhi recorded 8,470 cases of COVID-19.

Goa, which has not reported a single coronavirus case since May 1, confirmed seven new cases of COVID-19 on Thursday. Of the seven patients, five belong to the same family.

The government released Thursday a 2.3 trillion cheap farmer loan program to shore up the rural economy. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman offered free food grains and affordable housing to migrant workers who have been stranded in cities. India entered the last week of the third phase of the national closure. The Center implemented the closure of Pan India on March 25 to mitigate the spread of the virus in the country.
