More about Covid-19
It is worrying that the number of cases has increased significantly in the last three days of the second phase of the blockade, just before restrictions in many parts of the country are eased. New cases on Sunday rose to 2,667, breaking Saturday’s record of 2,564, even as the hardest hit state, Maharashtra, continued to report a drop in cases. The state recorded 678 new cases, down from 790 the previous day, and significantly less than the peak of 1,008 on Friday.
The country has now registered 42,456 Covid cases, of which 11,442 have recovered and 1,390 have died, according to the latest data collected from state governments.
The record increase in cases in Delhi comes at a time when the state government is contemplating relaxing restrictions to prepare for a new normal. With 427 new cases, Delhi’s total Covid-19 count has touched 4,549, with the death toll at 64.
The increase in infections was most dramatic in Punjab, whose new cases nearly doubled in one day. In the past two days, Punjab’s Covid-19 count increased nearly 200%, from 585 cases on Friday to 1,102 on Sunday, mainly due to pilgrims returning from positive Nanded tests from Maharashtra. On Sunday, these pilgrims made up 324 of the 330 new cases. Punjab has now achieved the unwanted distinction of becoming the first state in the region and the tenth in the country to cross the four-digit mark. The number is expected to rise sharply as the results of 5,140 tests are pending, authorities said.
Haryana, where the Covid-19 crisis so far had been limited, also witnessed a large increase in cases, with 66 reported on Sunday. So far there have been five Covid-19 deaths. Among the new patients, four are doctors in Sonipat, four are journalists in Panipat, and four are anganwadi kendra workers in Jind.
With a count of 73 cases, Faridabad has overtaken Gurgaon, which has reported 72 cases, as the most affected district in Haryana.
Three people died as Covid-19 in Rajasthan brought the state figure to 71, while 114 others tested positive for the disease in the state on Sunday, bringing the Covid-19 state count to 2886.
Gujarat, the second most affected state in the country, recorded 374 new cases and 28 deaths, both highest in a single day for the state. Of this, Ahmedabad alone reported 274 new cases and 23 deaths. The state’s total count has now reached 5,428 and its death toll is 290.
Tamil Nadu is another state where a sharp peak was seen in cases. The southern state registered 266 new cases, bringing its count to 3,023. Andhra Pradesh reported 58 new cases on Sunday, bringing the count to 1583.
In Telangana, 21 new cases of Covid-19 were registered, bringing the total count in the state to 1,082. It was a day of relief for Kerala as no positive cases were reported in the state. To date, 499 positive cases have been reported in the state, of which 401 have been discharged. Overall, more than 11,000 people have recovered in the country, representing almost 26% of the total number of people affected by the disease.
Jammu and Kashmir recorded 35 new Covid-19 cases bringing their count to 701. The number of Covid-19 cases in Bihar has now reached 517 with 36 more people, including two cancer patients, testing positive for the disease.
