Coronavirus vaccine in India Latest news Update:Four of the 14 COVID-19 vaccine candidates in India, could enter the phase of clinical trials in the next three to five months, the Health Minister, Harsh Vardhan, said on Sunday. In a interaction in line with the BJP spokesman GVL Narasimha Rao, Vardhan said that everybody was working on the development of a vaccine to halt the new coronavirus pandemic.

“There are more than 100 candidates for the development of a vaccine that is working at different levels. The WHO is coordinating the effort,” the health minister said. “India is also actively contributing to that effort. We have 14 vaccine candidates that are working on different levels,” he said. “The industry, the academic world are contributing to it and to our Ministry of Science is helping the Department of Biotechnology in all these efforts.”

The financial support and the regulatory clearance will be provided to those who are working on this, Vardhan said. “Of these 14, four vaccine candidates, in the next three to five months, can enter the phase of clinical trial. Now, they are in the pre-clinical trial phase,” said the minister.

“It is very difficult to predict when a vaccine will come, but as a physician, I can say that the process involves, a year would be a modest budget,” he said. “Until the vaccine is developed, people should use social vaccines as a mask and the social distancing.”

A PMO statement had said that a coronavirus vaccine was the most pressing need of India and the academic world, start-ups, and the industry had gathered at the forefront of design and development. The Department of Biotechnology has been made a central coordination agency to identify pathways for the development of vaccines.
