On Monday, the Supreme Court said the daily increase in COVID-19 cases in Delhi, Maharashtra, Gujarat and Assam appears “bleak” and that they should “take the time to introspect” and “prepare for December.”
“The situation for COVID cases is getting worse and is likely to do so in December,” said a bank led by Judge Ashok Bhushan.
The court asked the States to submit status reports within two days on the preparation and measures taken by them.
“Things have gotten worse in the last two weeks, in November … Our question is what is your current situation? What more steps are you taking? That is what we are going to investigate, ”Judge Bhushan told Additional Attorney General Sanjay Jain of Delhi.
Gujarat stopped
The court urged the Gujarat government to hold wild celebrations, weddings and public gatherings in the state despite the exponential increase in cases.
“Gujarat is worse after Delhi and Maharashtra. What is your policy? What’s going on? Weddings, parties, political party celebrations are happening … What is all this? Judge MR Shah asked the Gujarat side.
Judge R. Subhash Reddy noted that “there is a large increase in cases.”
“This is the time of introspection and preparation for December,” Judge Reddy observed orally.
Attorney General Tushar Mehta expressed his anguish over the situation as a human being. He said it was painful for him to witness how the court issued orders on the handling of those killed by COVID-19. He said his comments were made on behalf of humanity.
The hearing is based on the suo motu knowledge taken by the Supreme Court about the treatment given to COVID-19 patients and the bodies of those who lost the battle against the virus. In June, the court had referred to multiple media reports about a lack of infrastructure, patients and their families running from pillar to post to be admitted, and ultimately videos of the dead COVID-19 dumped into graves. .
Mr. Mehta said that the Union Minister of the Interior was monitoring the situation.
Mr Jain said there has been an “increase” in the request for ICU beds for patients in private hospitals in Delhi.
He said the government had approved notifications to reserve 80% of ICU beds for COVID-19 cases in 115 private hospitals in Delhi. He said this was done taking into account the flood of patients from neighboring states. The court asked him to provide the details in the status report. Jain said arrangements had been made to have 380 cremations per day in crematories attached to area-specific hospitals.
