Congressman Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday questioned the government’s efforts to increase tests for coronavirus as it extended the ongoing national blockade until May 3 to contain the pandemic. Accusing the government of dropping the ball on buying test kits on time, the congressional leader said India’s tests were conducted in the league of nations such as Laos, Niger and Honduras.
“India delayed the purchase of test kits and is now well below them. With only 149 tests per million Indians, we are now in the company of Laos (157), Niger (182) and Honduras (162). Key to fight the virus. Currently we are nowhere in the game (sic), “said Gandhi.

The opposition leader’s comment came when the latest government data showed that the number of people infected with coronavirus in India had reached 10,363, with 339 deaths.
Although the numbers are small compared to the hardest hit western countries, health experts fear it is due to India’s low levels of evidence, and the actual levels of infection could be much higher.
In the absence of test kits and protective gear for medical workers, India had only tested just over 2 lakhs of individuals at 9 p.m. Monday, according to data from the Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR).
The figure Gandhi cited put India far behind Italy, which conducted 15,935 tests per million people and the United States at 8,138.
Health experts have warned that widespread contagion could be disastrous in a country where millions live in dense slums and the health care system is overburdened.
So far, more than three-quarters of India’s cases are concentrated in approximately 80 of the country’s more than 700 districts, including New Delhi and Mumbai.
Rahul Gandhi and other opposition leaders have kept up the pressure on the government about its handling of the coronavirus crisis due to the lack of sufficient protective equipment or PPE for medical professionals, the crisis caused by the abrupt national closure and inadequate evidence .
The government has declined to say that India was one of the first countries to begin screening passengers at airports and to require mandatory quarantines for visitors from the worst-affected countries.
