COVID-19 test kits: India has enough coronavirus test kits, the government said.

India carried out 21,000 coronavirus tests on Monday, totaling 2.31 lakh, the government said Tuesday, adding that the country has enough test kits to “cover for a long time.” The number of isolation beds and intensive care units (ICUs) are also increasing across the country as the situation evolves, the Ministry of Health said.
At the daily briefing, Lav Agarwal, joint secretary of the Ministry of Health, said 1,211 new coronavirus cases and 31 deaths were reported in the past 24 hours, bringing the number of cases to 10,363 and the deaths to 339 in the country.
“We have kits that can last 6 weeks. We have now received another delivery of RT-PCR (reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction) test kits to cover us for a fairly long period of time. Also, we are ordering 33 lakh kits for RT -PCR and 37 lakh quick kits are expected at any time, “he said.
A total of 602 hospitals have been marked as dedicated COVID-19 facilities in coordination with states with a capacity of more than 1 lakh isolation beds and 12,000 ICU beds reserved for such patients in the country, the Ministry of Health said.
The government said that to break the virus chain in a particular area, no cases should be reported from there for at least 28 days.
“If no cases are reported for 28 days from a particular area, we can say that we have been able to break the transmission chain there,” authorities said.
Speaking about the number of daily tests, a senior official at the Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR) said: “So far we have analyzed 2.31 lakh samples, including 21,635 samples yesterday. Of these 18,644 were performed in the ICMR network of laboratories. We have enough kits to cover for a long time. “
Although the number of coronavirus cases in India is small compared to the worst-affected western countries, health experts fear this is due to India’s low levels of evidence and that actual infection levels could be much higher. India’s daily tests are much lower than those of countries like the US. In the USA, they perform 1.25 lakh coronavirus tests per day.
Congressman Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday questioned the government’s efforts to increase coronavirus testing, as he tweeted: “India has delayed the purchase of test kits and is now critically short of them. With only 149 tests per million Indians We are now in the company of Laos (157), Niger (182) and Honduras (162). Mass testing is the key to fighting the virus. Currently we are nowhere in the game (sic). “
