Congress leader Shashi Tharoor today praised the creative spirit of a Kolkata-based Durga Puja committee, which has chosen the coronavirus theme for the five-day festival starting on October 22.

The image shows the goddess killing the virus, a message Tharoor said was “brilliantly appropriate” amid the pandemic.

Durga Puja pandals in West Bengal have been declared no-entry zones for visitors, the Calcutta High Court said today in an order that was delivered just three days before Bengal’s biggest festival.

Only organizers will be allowed to enter the pandals, the court said, limiting the number to 25 for large pandals and 15 for smaller ones in light of the coronavirus outbreak.

Today, India reported an increase of 55,722 coronavirus infections in 24 hours, the lowest since the beginning of August 11 (53,601), bringing its tally to 75.5 lakh, data from the Health Ministry showed this morning.

In the 24-hour period, India, which is the second most affected country, reported 579 deaths, the lowest since July 19 (543) linked to COVID-19, bringing the total number of deaths to 1,14,610 .

West Bengal, which has seen a record increase in its daily number over the past 2 weeks, has reported the second highest number of deaths among all states.
