The Karnataka government has decided to keep state and pre-university schools, or PU universities, equivalent to classes 11 and 12 closed, at least until the end of December in view of the coronavirus pandemic.
“In the opinion of education experts, we should not start any classes in PU schools or universities until the end of December, and a decision should be made after that. In the few engineering colleges that have resumed classes, attendance is less than 5 percent. So we will meet against at the end of December and make an appropriate decision at that time according to the (coronavirus) situation, “said Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa.
The decision not to reopen any schools and colleges in Karnataka was made at a meeting where Mr. Yediyurappa and Minister of Secondary Education S Suresh Kumar met with government officials from the education department on Monday.
The meeting was scheduled after receiving input from parents, health committee officials, and education experts.
The decision, which comes just a week after the state decided to reopen undergraduate colleges and other institutes of higher education after consulting experts, was made amid fears of a second wave in Karnataka, the second largest state. affected country in absolute terms. numbers.
The number of coronavirus cases in Karnataka had declined in the lead-up to Diwali after a sudden spike in September of up to 10,000 cases per day. Although the number of new infections and active cases has been declining, there were more than 3,400 new COVID-19 infections over the weekend, with the state capital Bengaluru accounting for nearly two-thirds of them, government data shows.
Karnataka has a total of 8.7 lakh of coronavirus cases with 11,654 deaths.
Overall, India has experienced more than 91 lakh of COVID-19 infections since the January outbreak with 1,33,738 deaths.
