WASHINGTON: The United States recorded 1,303 more deaths from new coronaviruses in the past 24 hours, according to figures reported Monday by Johns Hopkins University, with confirmed cases in the United States approaching one million.
The country now has a total of 56,144 deaths, with 987,022 infections, according to a count by the Baltimore-based institution at 8:30 p.m. (0030 GMT Tuesday).
At least 111,109 people have recovered from the virus.
Monday’s 24-hour toll was in line with Sunday’s, but a sharp drop in Saturday’s figure of 2,494.
More states began lifting coronavirus block orders on Monday, but authorities said New York, the economic engine of the United States and the epicenter of coronavirus, was in no hurry with hospitalization rates still high.
As Colorado, Minnesota, Mississippi and Tennessee were among the last states to relax the restrictions, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said he was preparing to extend confinement measures in the hardest hit areas.
New York is the most affected state in the United States, with more than 17,300 deaths from Covid-19 from nearly 292,000 confirmed infections.

“Even if it is for a very short period of time, I think it would be a good thing,” he told reporters.
