Congress said the government needs to put money in the hands of the 13 poorest families in crore.

The opposition had criticized the center’s announcement of the first tranche of the COVID-19 Rs 20 lakh crore economic stimulus package on Wednesday as a “disappointment” and a “big zero” that has “nothing” for migrant workers, even when the BJP hailed it, saying it reflects the government’s commitment to creating jobs and stimulating the economy.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the measures announced on Wednesday to boost the economy affected by the coronavirus blockade will improve liquidity, empower entrepreneurs and strengthen their competitive spirit.
He also said that the announcements made by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will go a long way towards addressing the problems facing companies, especially micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs).
Congress leader P Chidambaram attacked the government shortly after Ms Sitharaman unveiled the first set of incentives as part of the special package announced by Modi on Tuesday, saying he is “a prisoner of his own ignorance and his fears. “
“Except for the modest MSME package, we are disappointed with today’s announcements,” he said.
Chidambaram said the first thing the government should do is “put money into the hands of the families of Rs 13 million in the population fund” which will cost the government only Rs 65 billion if Rs 5,000 is given to each family.
Other opposition parties, such as the left and the Trinamool Congress, also attacked the government. Trinamool President of Congress and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said the finance minister had offered nothing to states and that her announcements were “a big zero.”
In describing the first set of components of the COVID-19 Rs 20 lakh crore economic stimulus package, Ms. Sitharaman announced about Rs 6 lakh crore in appropriations, including Rs 3 lakh crore for small business unsecured loans and a line of Rs 30,000 crore life for Non-bank and housing finance companies as part of measures to help the economy overcome disruptions caused by the coronavirus blockade.
On Thursday, it announced a second batch of measures to help migrant workers, street vendors, small farmers.
