Maharashtra witnessed 25,833 new coronavirus infections on Thursday, the highest peak in a single day since last March, when the state’s first Covid-19 infection was detected. Delhi recorded 600 cases, its highest level in three months. Punjab, Gujarat, and Kerala also reported higher numbers of cases. “There is a resurgence in Covid-19 cases. We don’t know which way this second wave will take, ”said Dr. Uma Kumar, Head of Rheumatology, AIIMS, in an interview. Delhi’s Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday called on the Center to relax the Covid-19 vaccination guidelines and open it up for everyone over the age of 18. Punjab CM in the recent meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi had also urged to expand the vaccination program. So far (as of Thursday night) India has vaccinated 3.89 million million people.
Union Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan in Lok Sabha said on Friday: “No one should have any doubts about COVID19 vaccines.” He urged all people eligible for Covid vaccine injections to take it. “I urge everyone to get vaccinated.”
To limit the further increase in coronavirus cases, many states and UT have again begun to adopt severe restrictions such as more stringent Covid-19 masks and guidelines; and recover the containment zones; Some states have even announced the shutdown, albeit in districts that report a higher number of Covid-19 cases. Nighttime curfews are back, as well as restrictions on interstate travel. The reopening of schools, colleges and educational institutes has also been affected.
