NEW DELHI: Up to 3,900 new cases of Covid-19 and 195 deaths were reported in the past 24 hours, the highest spike in a single day, the health ministry said Tuesday, saying that “some states” did not report cases in one of in a timely manner, which is now being addressed.
Addressing the daily briefing on the situation of Covid-19 in the country, the joint secretary of the ministry of health, Lav Agarwal, said that the total number of cases amounts to 46,433 and the number of deaths is 1,568.
“We are dealing with an infectious disease. Therefore, the timely reporting of cases and their management is very crucial and gaps were observed in these areas in some states, which are being addressed after due persuasion, ”said Agarwal.
The ministry said 1,020 Covid-19 patients recovered in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of cured to 12,726, a recovery rate of 27.41 percent.
“We are very comfortable in terms of managing Covid-19 from now on, but any laxity at the field level can have consequences,” he said.
Affirming that it is important to trace each and every contact of Covid-19 positive patients, Agarwal said to conduct surveillance for symptoms of severe acute respiratory infection (SARI) and influenza-like illness (ILI) in facilities in containment areas, and otherwise yields valuable data and guides further action.
The blockade has yielded very positive results, the case doubling time has improved from 3.4 days before the blockage to 12 days now, he said, adding that it is important to maintain momentum.
