Tamil Nadu became the third state in India to register 7,000 cases of coronavirus. Up to 669 people tested positive for the deadly virus in the past 24 hours. With the largest increase in the daily COVID-19 count, the total number of cases in the state increased to 7,204.
Chennai only registered 3,839 coronavirus cases, according to the state bulletin. The Koyambedu market in northern Chennai emerged as the last COVID-19 hotsport. Nearly 2,000 cases were linked to the famous Chennai market. The state government assured Sunday that the situation in the Koyambedu host market was under control.
The state government attributed the “aggressive evidence” behind the sudden outbreak in the number of cases. So far, more than 2 lakh samples have been analyzed, the highest in the country. Maharashtra, the worst-affected state in the coronavirus pandemic with 22,000 cases, carried out 2,16,416 samples until Friday.
“We are doing more tests than the states with the largest populations and that is why new positive cases are emerging,” said Tamil Nadu health minister Vijayabaskar.
Coronavirus cases in Tamil Nadu may also continue to rise this week, authorities warned. “Throughout the week, the numbers may continue to be high in Chennai, considering more and more emerging and testing groups like the Tiruvanmiyur market,” said J Radhakrishnan, special nodal officer for the Greater Chennai Corporation region.
“Every person must be an anti-COVID-19 soldier and make a point to wear the mask without fail,” said Radhakrishnan. The authorities urged citizens to use umbrellas to guarantee social distancing in public spaces.
Up to 135 people recovered from the disease on Sunday. A total of 1,959 were cured of coronavirus infection in the state. The death rate in Tamil Nadu is less than 1%. The coronavirus claimed 47 lives in the state.
In addition to Chennai, Cuddalore, Villupuram, Tiruvallur, Chengelpet and Kancheepuram have the highest number of coronavirus cases in Tamil Nadu. “The public does not need to have apprehensions about the number of positive cases,” said the state’s health minister.
The Madras Superior Court on Friday ordered the closure of the Tasmac liquor stores until the closure is lifted. The court allowed the sale of alcohol through both online and home delivery modes. The court approved the order in view of the violation of the closing regulations, particularly the social distancing in the liquor stores.
