The number of coronavirus cases in Dharavi in Mumbai, Asia’s largest slum, has crossed the 100 mark. On Friday, 15 new cases were detected in the expanding area, totaling 101, including 10 deaths.
A 62-year-old patient died of the virus in a hospital, the PTI news agency reported. Three new cases were found in Matunga, Muslim Nagarand Indira Nagar Forced Labor Camp, two in Social Nagar and one in Dr Baliga Nagar, Laxmi Chawl, Janata Society and Sarvoday Society.
In the densely populated Dharavi, about 8 lakh people live in close shacks, which makes social distancing difficult.
The area has been categorized as an access point. Last week, civic authorities said nine containment areas were identified in Dharavi to control the spread of the virus in slums. Police have also blocked entry points to stop movement to contain the disease.
Area residents are not allowed to leave their homes; The essentials are provided at your door step.
Mumbai with 2,073 cases of coronavirus is the most affected city in the country; Maharashtra the most affected state. The city of 1.2 million rupees has been under total blockade since last month.
In light of the increase in cases, Maharashtra’s chief minister Uddhav Thackeray extended the closure until April 30. He also explained why Mumbai has such a high number of cases.
“In Mumbai and Pune, especially in Mumbai, there are large airports. It is actually the place through which people enter the country. Symbolically it is like the Gateway of India. When we began to examine, several countries were not in the pick list, but those countries had also been affected by the coronavirus, “he had said.
Local authorities have also attributed the high numbers of COVID-19 in Mumbai to its massive test unit.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said Thursday that it had performed more than 27,000 tests of COVID-19, which is 12.59 percent of the total number of tests conducted in the country so far.
