GUWAHATI: Assam reported Thursday its 45th Covid-19 case, and along with the incidental capture of a “most wanted” car thief who had been playing cat and mouse with the police in the state and in neighboring Arunachal Pradesh for more than a year.
The defendant, a 35-year-old Sonitpur resident, was among the 41 pilgrims who arrived at Silchar in the Cachar district from Ajmer Sharif in Rajasthan by bus on Wednesday. All passengers were screened upon arrival for symptoms of flu-like illness, and luckily the defendant was quarantined at the location designated by Silchar. Covid-19 Hospitalthe police said.
Back in Sonitpur, Bhola Ram Borah, the officer in charge of the Thelamara police post, was watching news on television when the defendant’s name sounded. “I made sure he was the (accused) we were looking for when the newsreader said he was from Sonitpur. We visited his home and his wife confirmed that he had visited Ajmer Sharif,” the officer said.
Borah had arrested him once, but he stole cars again in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh once he was released from prison.
Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed Thursday that the accused had carried out a test. positive for Covid-19 and would be stopped after he recovers.
“The lab results arrived Wednesday night. It is being quarantined at Silchar Medical College and Hospital for now. Police are investigating when and how a man wanted in various criminal cases escaped from Assam, visited Ajmer and returned. They will also find out why he returned to Silchar instead of Sonitpur, “said Sarma.
Police suspect that the accused did not go down in Guwahati, from where Sonitpur is about 183 km away, because he feared being identified.
After testing positive for Covid-19, the defendant’s passengers were removed from their home’s isolation and placed in institutional quarantine.
