The thirteenth edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) witnessed another controversial moment when the Rajasthan Royals (RR) were batting in the first inning against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in Sharjah on Tuesday.

CSK sent RR to bat first and they quickly found themselves on the hindfoot due to the quick partnership between Sanju Samson (74) and Steve Smith (69). The two partnered for 121 runs for the second field and brought RR to 132/1 in 11.3 overs.

But after Samson was sacked by Ngidi at 12, CSK regained some control in the match thanks to Sam Curran’s two wickets at 17, reducing RR to 173/6.

However, on the 18th, referee Chettithody Shamshuddin made a dubious decision against RR’s Tom Curran, who was hitting alongside his captain Smith. On the fifth ball of Deepak Chahar’s over, the English SUV was caught behind even though the ball had hit his thigh.

Curran was shocked by the decision, and even more so, by the lack of a review, which was previously being made by Rahul Tewatia. However, right after making the decision, both referees had a short chat and decided to go upstairs to get a clearer picture of the incident.

The television replay showed that there was no connection between the bat and the ball, and what made it more interesting was the fact that it bounced before Dhoni picked it up. Later, the decision was reversed.

According to the rule book, if a batter has been handed over to the field, the third referee should not come into play. That’s probably why Dhoni started to protest. In these situations, if the referees have a question in mind, they tend to climb the stairs to review the catch and make the final decision.

But in this case, it was not done and questions will arise about the decision not to reverse the game between KXIP and DC.

While there was a lot of confusion regarding Dhoni’s appeal for Curran’s wicket, he likely appealed for LBW and the referee indicated to go catch him.

These are some of the reactions:

Rajasthan Royals worked their way from there to finish with a total of 216/7 after Jofra Archer hit a 27-ball 8. Curran finished the innings with 10, hitting a single limit.
