Enmeshed in controversy over granting Wadhaw residents written permission to travel during a nationwide shutdown in April, IPS officer Amitabh Gupta has been appointed as Pune’s new police commissioner. He was the chief secretary of the state Department of the Interior.
During the confinement imposed due to the Covid-19 outbreak, he delivered a letter to the residents of Wadhaw, whom he described as “friends of the family,” to move to their lodge in Mahabaleshwar from a guest house in Khandala. . The Wadhwans are named as defendants in the PMC Bank fraud case. After the matter came to light, the state government sent him on compulsory license and ordered an investigation into the matter, but he resumed his duties within days. Gupta is an IPS officer from 1992.
Outgoing Pune Police Commissioner K Venkatesham has been transferred to Mumbai as Additional Director General of Police (Special Operations). In addition, Abhinav Deshmukh has been appointed Police Superintendent of the Pune Rural Police. On Thursday, the state Department of the Interior approved an order in this regard.
