Congressional veteran PC Chacko resigned from the party today complaining that “there was no democracy left” in Congress and sparing not even the “high command” in their recriminations. “There is no congressional party in Kerala as such,” only two factions of the party, he said.
His abrupt resignation comes as a big surprise to Congress in Kerala, just days before the state elections on April 6.
He announced to the media in Delhi that he had been considering the measure for several days.
“I left Congress and sent my resignation to the acting head of the party, Sonia Gandhi. I had been deliberating on this decision for the last few days. I come from Kerala, where there is no Congress party as such. There are two parties: Congress ( me) and Congress (A). It is a two-party coordinating committee that functions as the unit of Kerala Congress, “said Chacko.
“Kerala faces a crucial election. People want Congress to come back, but the top leaders of Congress practice groupism. I have been arguing with the high command that this should end. But the high command also agrees with the proposal presented by both groups, “he alleged, without naming Sonia Gandhi or Rahul Gandhi.
Chacko, 74, one of the leading faces and spokesmen in Congress, is a former deputy from Thrissur in Kerala.
Accusing his party of ignoring state leaders in the selection of candidates for the Kerala elections, Chacko said: “There is no democracy left in Congress. The list of candidates has not been discussed with the state congressional committee. There is no panels for no discussions about the polls, winnability of the candidates. There have always been factions in the parties, even in Congress, but it no longer makes sense. “
It was caustically asked whether the votes would be counted or announced as “Congress (I) and Congress (A).”
He added: “Being a congressman in Kerala is very difficult. If you belong to some faction in Congress only then can you survive. The leadership of Congress is not very active.”
Chacko’s departure is big and shameful for the party in a state where its main leader and activist, Rahul Gandhi, is a deputy.
By the way, Chacko had been one of the members of Congress who considered himself fiercely loyal to the Gandhis.
