New Delhi:
Tweets by Senior Congressional Leader Anand Sharma about Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to vaccine manufacturers are the latest source of embarrassment for the party as it fights open dissent since its last electoral defeat, in Bihar. When the apparent praise in his posts generated comments, he tweeted that “the lines got lost” in his previous posts, leading to “avoidable confusion.”
But critics of the party, as well as many within the organization, saw it as a feeble attempt at recovery.
In tweets on Sunday, the former trade union minister said Prime Minister Modi’s visit to two facilities involved in the development of Covid vaccines was an acknowledgment of Indian scientists and an acknowledgment of the institutions India has built over decades. Just a day earlier, his party colleague, congressional spokesman Randeep Surjewala, had criticized the prime minister in scathing posts referring to farmers’ protests.
Anand Sharma first tweeted: “Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the Serum Institute, Bharat Biotech and Zydus Cadilla was an acknowledgment of Indian scientists and their work to produce the vaccine for COVID-19. That alone will boost morale. of the front-line warriors and reassure the nation. ”
Sharma was one of 23 “dissident” letter writers who, earlier this year, called for radical changes in the party and “visible and effective leadership”. His post, therefore, generated speculation that he was shifting allegiance.
Subsequently, the former Union minister published a clarification and a new tweet.
“Regretting the error in our previous tweet where the lines got misplaced resulting in avoidable confusion. The original tweet reads as follows,” he wrote.

“Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s visit to the Serum Institute, Bharat Biotech and Zydus Cadila was an acknowledgment of Indian scientists and their work to produce the vaccine for COVID-19. This is to acknowledge and respect the institutions that India has built during decades of experience and the potential to make India the world’s largest vaccine manufacturer Urge PM to ensure that an efficient and equitable platform is functional as the vaccine arrives. This alone will boost warrior morale COVID on the front line and it will reassure the nation (sic), “said Sharma.
Prime Minister Modi visited Ahmedabad, Hyderabad and Pune on Saturday to review the development and manufacturing process of coronavirus vaccines. He visited the Zydus Biotech Park in Ahmedabad, Bharat Biotech in Hyderabad and the Serum Institute of India in Pune.
Randeep Surjewala had accused the prime minister of “running television” while farmers protested on the roads of Delhi.
“Hopefully the prime minister talks to farmers on the road instead of flying on the plane,” he had said in a tweet.
“The coronavirus vaccine will be developed by scientists, farmers will feed the country, and Modi ji and BJPites will run television.”
This is the latest example of Congress speaking in two voices and one of the letter writers expressing different views to the party line.
After Kapil Sibal, another letter writer seemed to point to Gandhi’s leadership again after the debacle of Congress in Bihar, the head of the party, Sonia Gandhi, established three committees to discuss policy issues related to economic affairs, foreign affairs and security. national, with former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in all three.
Sharma is on the foreign affairs commission, along with Shashi Tharoor, Salman Khurshid and Saptagiri Ulaka.
