On Monday, Congress demanded the resignation of Union Minister Smriti Irani on corruption charges brought against her by an international shooter, and said a full investigation must be launched to determine the truth.
Congressional chief spokesman Randeep Surjewala told a press conference that the charges were serious and that Prime Minister Narendra Modi should order an independent judicial investigation to punish those guilty.
International attacker Vartika Singh had recently gone to court accusing the Union Textile Minister and two other people of demanding money to make her a member of the central women’s commission, days after she herself was named in a police complaint.
The MP-MLA court in Sultanpur, Uttar Pradesh, set a hearing for January 2, after which it will decide whether the case falls under its jurisdiction, according to its lawyer.
The attacker has alleged that people close to Irani sent him a false letter, naming her a member of the central commission for women, a possible reference to the National Commission for Women.
Surjewala said that serious corruption charges have been brought against the union minister. If such charges had been brought against a minister during the UPA, Smriti Irani would have sat in a dharna outside the congressional office, he said.
“Smriti Irani should resign and face an independent investigation. Prime Minister Narendra Modi should ask him to resign. Why don’t you order an independent judicial investigation against her, since no ordinary person but an international shooter and a decorated daughter have brought the charges? ”He told reporters.
This is also the prime minister’s test and he should order a judicial investigation into the matter. We expect Smriti Irani and the prime minister to respond to the charges, added the congressional leader. Irani’s legal advisor, Kirat Nagra, had said that the case brought against him by the shooter Vartika Singh was based on “the most bizarre and naughty set of falsehoods” and that “political patronage” was widespread in this regard.
Nagra said the case was a concerted attempt to discredit and defame the minister, adding that he will take legal recourse against him.
