NEW DELHI: Amid the clamor for its leadership crisis and political demoralization since the advent of the BJP led by Narendra Modi, Congress plans to hit the reset button with a mega show to celebrate “founding day” around the idea of nationalism this year.
For its 136th year of foundation, the AICC has asked its state and district units to run “groundbreaking campaigns” to celebrate December 28. One of the suggested campaigns is that of “Tiranga Yatras”, which seems to be inspired by similar campaigns carried out by BJP on different occasions. In addition, the party will carry out an online campaign – “selfie with tiranga”. He has asked elected leaders and officials to post photos and videos with the tricolor on social media platforms.
Clubbed with “founding day” celebrations is the plan to share focus with “farmers protest”. The idea is to convey to the common man that the party owns the ongoing protest against the three controversial central agricultural laws. Congressional strategists believe this will provide a perspective that Congress is at the center of the struggle for the people and constitutes the bulwark of the fight against the BJP.
The other program that Congress has devised to underscore its leadership role is the liberation of Bangladesh and victory over Pakistan in 1971, whose anniversary was December 16. As the 1971 victory completes its 50th anniversary in 2021, Congress plans to hold Golden Jubilee celebrations for a year. A committee to write the programs is likely to be announced. The panel may be headed by former spokesperson Meira Kumar, daughter of Jagjivan Ram, Defense Minister during the 1971 war, or former Defense Minister AK Antony.
