Following the reverse in Panchayati Raj Polls, Congress in Rajasthan performed well in the Urban Local Bodies (ULB) elections on Sunday with victories in 619 districts.

In results declared Sunday for 1,775 districts out of 50 ULB in 12 districts, Congress won 619 districts, compared to 548 for the BJP.

BJP also lagged behind the Independents, who won 596 districts. Other parties in the fray included the Bahujan Samaj Party (7), the Communist Party of India (2), the CPI [Marxist] (2) and Rashtriya Loktantrik Party (RLP) (1).

In recent Panchayati Raj polls, the BJP had managed to elect Zila Pramukhs in 12 Zila Parishad, while Congress only managed five Zila Pramukhs.

At a news conference Sunday night, the state speaker of Congress, Govind Singh Dotasra, said the results indicate that the BJP is growing “away” from the urban electorate, far behind independent votes.

He said that of the total of 50 ULB, 43 Nagar Palika and 7 Nagar Parishad, “Congress has won a majority in 17 and, as far as independents are concerned, most of them have the support of Congress” and stated that the Congress will be able to form a Board in more than 30 of the 50 ULB that went to the polls.

When asked about the high number of independents who won the polls, Dotasra said that “with Congress as the ruling party, one in two candidates was hoping for a party ballot and, in its absence, they would contest as independents. “.

He said that as part of the congressional strategy, it sent independents in various places, instead of distributing symbols, as in Bharatpur, “and this strategy was successful.

BJP leaders did not comment on the losses.
